So you've decided to go on this journey with me and
now you are asking yourself 'how do I get started?' First, let me mention the
excitement of this will soon wear off and the voices in your head will be
saying 'Shit, what did I get myself into?' Well, I'm here to reassure and
remind everyone to be patient and enjoy the ride.
When I ran in the Kansas City Half-Marathon in
2007, I came to the understanding it wasn't the race itself that I was
proud of accomplishing, but the time put into getting there. I struggled every
morning my alarm went off and kept thinking how ridiculous I was for wanting to
do something like this. Every time my knees would start hurting around mile 9
or a cold rain would envelope me at mile 1, I teetered on 'the line red line'.
"Why am I doing this? Can't I just run a 5K?" No, I wanted to reach
for something I thought was unattainable, something not very many people work
for or have the privilege of accomplishing.
After watching Carie complete her first race, I was
inspired yet overwhelmed. "How do I start? What do I eat? What do I wear?
How often do I run?" All these questions tumbled through my mind and
somehow I managed to compile a ground-base for getting started.
So please feel free to add to this blog for all the experienced racers
and I will continue to share with all of you what I have learned. Also, check
out my links to running tools, schedules, advice, and more posted on my page.
Enjoy!
